EDUCAUSE – Core Data Survey
This report includes some data on the digital divide within higher education. It notes, for instance, “At private institutions, there is approximately a 20% greater level of student ownership than at public institutions….” and continues, “This finding, along with an intuitive awareness that a digital divide still persists on any campus, be it private or public, supports the premise that public access to equipment needs to continue to be offered or some students will be disadvantaged in using technology effectively in the pursuit of their academic goals.”
EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, has released a monograph, EDUCAUSE Core Data Service 2002 Summary Report, which summarizes data from a broad sample of 621 colleges and universities about their campus IT environments and practices.
The report presents aggregates of data through nearly 100 tables and accompanying descriptive text in five areas relevant to planning and managing IT in higher education: IT Organization, Staffing, and Planning; IT Financing and Management; Faculty and Student Computing; Networking and Security; and Information Systems.
Other organizations have related studies and reports. These include:
- The Campus Computing Project ” the largest continuing study of the role of information technology in American higher education”
The COSTS Project
“Capturing the Cost of Supporting Technology Services
in Colleges and Universities”
